“How can I be with someone who thinks this way???”

Roughly every 5 months, I say that to my partner.

I'll tell you why, and I hope you’ll side with me.

You might know that we currently live in a van. Me, my partner, and our 12-year-old puppy. The lifestyle fits us well (who needs a shower?), and for the most part, we live as you do.

We use a (tiny) bathroom, we sit at a (tiny) dining table, we cook in a (tiny) kitchen.

Our kitchen is pretty well outfitted.

Fridge — check.

Stove top — check.

Wine rack — check. (That one’s for me.)

But despite these domestic comforts, we never skimp on the ONE road trip requisite.

Snacks.

A bag of kettle cooked chips from this gas station. A Dr. Pepper from this one. We usually keep it in check.

When we want to rave, though … we get Oreos.

We love Oreos. Even without milk, we can crush a package easily. (Working on it.)

The Original Oreo is great as is. But the sweet spot of the Oreo dynasty is — don’t fight me on this — the Double Stuf Oreo.

Perfect ratio of chocolate cookie to non-cream creme. Nothing is better. You can even eat ‘em dry. That’s the magic of a Double Stuf.

HOWEVER …

My partner disagrees.

Him: “Mega Stuf is the best Oreo.”

Me: “How can I be with someone who thinks this way???”

Mega is too much middle. TOO MUCH MIDDLE. The sweetness is overpowering. The cookie is lost. The non-cream creme cakes your teeth.

It’s the waterboarding of all the Oreos. But he loves it.

When these moments pop up (every 5 months — like clockwork), I question our entire life together.

And in a fantastic segue ...

I’m also reminded of why our digital marketplace is so freaking fantastic.

You will not be everyone’s cup of tea Oreo. Some people will love your level of sweetness, yes. Others (the bonkers ones) will want something sweeter.

But your community is out there.

This fact of life is one of the bigger reasons why I never teach you how to write to go viral.

Viral content is writing without a perspective, a point of view, a difference.

Viral content is so bland and boring that it appeals to shallow masses of people. It’s The Original Oreo.

Fans of The Original Oreo buy it every once in a while. But they don’t love it so much that they’ll risk their romantic partnership and write a whole email about it.

You want to build a Double Stuf community. Or a Mega Stuf community. (Smaller — I hope — but still mighty.)

To cultivate a community and a business like that ^, you need to write like YOU. With all of your personality, your bad jokes, your expertise, YOUR way of showing up.

It’s hard to do, sure. When else in your life have you had to express yourself authentically AND sell your product AND be chill on video? (This is why people love The Writer’s Room — the course I built to teach you how to be an awesome writer.)

But when you nail the art of writing and the art of being yourself through it … the Double Stuf community rallies. And that’s the first building block of a successful business.
